Sucker Punch (Movie)

Sucker Punch
Directed By: Zack Snyder
Release Date: March 25, 2011 (US)
Length: 110 minutes (1 hour, 50 minutes)
Date Watched: 26/7/2011

Review: This movie was absolutely terrible. The plot in general made enough sense, but there were someparts where I was just fed up with the movie. Definitely won't be watching this one again. D:

The main character, Babydoll, is put into a "mental hospital" where the girls there dance to attract sexual customers. Babydoll and four other girls all decide that they're tired of it and want to escape. Long story short, only one girl got to leave in the end.

The number one thing that ticked me off about this movie is that you never get to see Babydoll's dance. I mean, you don't get to see anyone else's either, but everyone at the "hospital" makes a big deal about Babydoll's dance. That it's the best, and it holds all the males' attention. But we onlookers never to get to see it.

Every time Babydoll starts dancing, she closes and eyes and goes into some kind of dream world where her and the other four girls fight against fictional creatures in a kind of war. It was really mind-boggling as to how she could dance to something like that. Like I said, you never get to see her dance.

To be perfectly honest, this movie wasn't what it was made out to be. The commercials showed an action-oacked film with fighting around every corner. The only action in the entire movie was when Babydoll was dancing. The dance we never got to see :(.

This movie was most definiely a true disappointment. If you didn't see it in theaters and were thinking about getting the DVD, don't. It is totally a waste of your time.

What's your status? (30/7/2011)

This post was inspired by, well, my previous Reading Status posts. I wanted to make it something that everyone could particpate in. Every Saturday (and sometimes Sunday), I will post what I've finished in the past week, what I'm currently reading and where I am in the book/s, what I plan to read next, and possibly what I want to buy/get. I will be trying to do this every week, so be sure to check back every weekend! Be sure to leave your links to your WYS posts in the comments.

This next portion of the post is an idea that I saw on the wonderful blog Small Review. She posts what reviews and memes she has posted and participated in that last week. Remember, however, that it is not mandatory for you to do this part of the post.

NOTICE: For the entire month of August, Marla @ Starting the Next Chapter will host WYS as her contest prize! :D I'll have a link to Marla's posts every week, so no worries.

Night World: Volume 2 by LJ Smith

Night World: Volume 2 (Night World, #4-6)
By LJ Smith
Publisher: Simon Pulse, 2008
662 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 21/7/2011
Genres: Action, Coming of Age, Romance, Fantasy, Young Adult
Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters -- they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And falling in love breaks all the laws of the Night World.

In
Dark Angel
, Gillian is saved from drowning by her guardian angel. Only visible to Gillian, Angel will fulfill her heart's every desire. But when Angel starts making strange and sinister requests, Gillian must question who he truly is and where he came from.

Armed with a wooden stake, martial arts, and the will to resist a vampire's mind control, Rashel struggles to avenge her mother's death in
The Chosen
. Then she meets Quinn, her soulmate, who is part of the world she has vowed to destroy.

Hannah receives notes warning her of incredible danger in
Soulmate. But if death is her destiny, is the Lord of the Night World's love strong enough to save her?

~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: "Gillian Lennox didn't mean to die that day."
~Last Line: "And then they just sat together, holding each other as the room filled with light."

Review: I reread this omnibus for about a thousand challenges :), and because I reread Volume 1 last year. I am just basically reliving an amazing series and remembering why I love it! Still waiting to get Secret Fate, too. :D To keep it from being all meshed up, I'll review each story seperately.

Dark Angel: This novel was really awesome. I love how the first thing you read about is Gillian dying. It made the book really interesting. My favorite character in DA: David. David was really down-to-earth. You might think that since he's dating the most popular girl in school, he's stuck up. But he actually isn't.

The Chosen: This story is one of my favorites in the omnibus. Rashel lost her mom and her best friend. You can't help but feel sorry for her. I don't blame her at all for becoming a vampire hunter. My favorite character in TC: Rashel. She was always trying to ultimately be a good person. I mean, who else would let the most infamous vampire EVER escape?! Well, okay, she's more compassionate; not necessarily being a good person.

Soulmate: This is my other favorite in this omnibus. I loved when Hannah did the hypnosis, and she got to learn about her past lives. My favorite character in Soulmate: Thierry. He's seen Hannah in quite a few of her lives and is determined to stop the cycle this time. I love determined characters :).

So as you can see, this omnibus has a lot to offer. The series is truly amazing!! :D

Waiting on Wednesday #12: The Son of Neptune

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over @ Breaking the Spine; we are to give a book that we are anxiously anticipating the release of. I probably won't be participating every week, but I will try to post every so often.

This week's spotlight novel:

The Son of Neptune
By Rick Riordan
Publication Date: October 4th, 2011

From GoodReads.com:

In The Lost Hero, three demigods named Jason, Piper, and Leo made their first visit to Camp Half-Blood, where they inherited a quest:

Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall.
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.

Who are the other four mentioned in the prophecy? The answer may lie in another camp miles away, where a new camper has shown up and appears to be the son of Neptune, god of the sea...

What book are you looking forward to?

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Not sure I told you all this, but all my reviews are labeled according to their GoodReads Rating, not the Overall Rating :).
_________________________________________________________________

Before I Fall
By Lauren Oliver
Publisher: HarperCollins, 2010
470 pages, hardcover
Date Finished: 14/7/2011
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Coming of Age, Some Mystery, Romance

Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High—from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life.

Instead, it turns out to be her last.

Then she gets a second chance. Seven chances, in fact. Reliving her last day during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: "They say that just before you die your whole life flashes before your eyes, but that's not how it happened for me."
~Last Line: "The rest you have to find out for yourself."

Review: It took me months to finish this. I have no idea how it got to the bottom of my Currently-Reading pile. I started it and LOVED it; then I probably started focusing on other books and plain old forfot about it. But recently, I made myself pick the book up again; I didn't want to put it down!

The main character, Samantha, dies in a car accident. She didn't know she was going to die; it was just another ordinary, marvelous day in the life of Samantha Kingston. Everything seemed like Mother Nature was taking her course -- until Sam relived her last day on Earth six times.

This novel was really amazing! It taught me a lot of important lessons, and I loved what the afterlife was trying to get her to do. She definitely picked up fast. I probably would've had to relive the same day a thousand times. But anyway!

My favorite character in this book was Kent. He'd been in love with Sam for quite a while. He never gave up trying to win her heart, and that made me love his character even more! There aren't many real-life Kents, but, surprisingly, I know one :).

Overall, this novel was marvelous. I'm anxious to get my hand on Oliver's Delirium now!

Catching Up In Memes #3

Waiting on Wednesday #11

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over @ Breaking the Spine; we are to give a book that we are anxiously anticipating the release of. I probably won't be participating every week, but I will try to post every so often.

This week's spotlight novel:

Thursday Interpretation #18 & Library Unveiled #8

Thursday Interpretations is a "meme," which means that you may participate in this on your blog, but I won't be advertising it nor adding a Linky for links to your post/s.

Anyway, Thursday Interpretation will be a weekly post where I post a motivational quote (and/or a book quote) and tell you my feelings about it. You are more than welcome to post a comment telling how you feel about the quote.

*Remember that these are only my opinions. They are not influenced by anyone else.*

This week's motivational quote:

"Give respect before you expect it, treat people the way you want to be treated, remember the mission, set the example, keep going." ~Vernon Baker, African American Veteran of World War II

My Thoughts: Keep going, and remember your goal. Don't act ugly to others if you wouldn't want them to act that way towards you. Give respect, whether you get it or not.
_______________________________________________________________________

This meme was started by my good 'ole blogging friend, The Mad Scientist @ Steampunkery & Book Reviews; every Thursday, you are supposed to post 5 books from your shelf and maybe give a snippet of your thoughts about the book. You can use physical books, ebooks, audios, whatever you have that makes up your library :). This week I'm unveiling:

The Twilight Saga: the Official Illustrated Guide by Stephenie Meyer:
Got this one a while ago at the store, but seriously excited to start reading it!

New England Witch Chronicles by Chelsea Bellingeri:
Just received this one for review. Looks like a really awesome book! Esp since the Salem Witch Trials are incoporated into it. :)

Haven by Kristi Cook:
Also won this one in a giveaway. This one looks pretty promising as well!!

Sinful by Sara Dailey & Staci Weber:

The Devil's Arithmetic
By Jane Yolen
Publisher: Puffin Books, 2004

Date Finished: 11/7/2011

Hannah thinks tonight's Passover Seder will be the same as always. Little does she know that this year she will be mysteriously transported into the past where only she knows the horrors that await.
~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: " 'I'm tired of remembering,' Hannah said to her mother as she climbed into the car."
~Last Line: "Life."
~Last Line (of author's "What is True about this Book"): "And can remind us that the swallows still sing around the smokestacks."

Review: The first time I'd even heard this title, we were studying World War II in English. Unfortunately we didn't get to read the book; I was glad that I found the book, though! The movie was really good, and the book was even better! :)

Our main character, Hannah Stern, is tired of remembering about what happened during World War II. She doesn't see why it's all so importaqnt to keep remembering every year. She gives all of her wine willingly (when you're only supposed to pour part of it) and is given the task of opening the door for Elijah. Voila. Somehow twenty-first century Hannah Stern is sent back in time to 1962.

I loved the plot of this. Since I'd already seen the movie, it was definitely easier to picture the characters. Still, everything that happened was, in a way, new to me all over again. I can understand why Hannah didn't want to remember every year. To her, it was boring and in the past. Why bother with it; it's not like you can go back and change it. But I think once she went back in time and actually lived it, she realized why they work so hard to remember it, and to make sure that the children know it.

Hannah definitely became appreciative of her family's past. I became more educated on what really happened in the camps. I think everyone can learn something from this book, and maybe even the movie. Recommending this one to anyone and everyone! :)

Killing and eating. Hunting and dying. . . . It's the way the world has always been. Humans wetre part of it, too, except that they let slaughterhouses do the killing for them and received their prey in the form of McDonald's hamburgers.

Guest Post by Meredith Allard!

And today, I have a wonderful guest post from Meredith Allard!!! If you didn't get to read my review of her novel, Her Dear and Loving Husband, or our interview, click HERE. And if you already have, help me welcome Meredith back to Butterfly Feet!!!

As I began my journey into the vampire world, having decided to write my own vampire story, I noticed that some readers are very particular about how they like their vampires. I’ve seen more than one criticism that vampires these days are too soft. Vampires are bloodthirsty, angry, violent creatures of the night, they say. That’s what vampires have always been, and that’s what they always should be. Fair enough, since we all have our likes and dislikes about what we like to read.

I realized that I had another important decision to make as I was writing Her Dear & Loving Husband. How violent were my vampires going to be? As I stated in a previous guest blog post, the main reason I had never been into the vampire genre was because I’m not a fan of violence in any way, shape, or form. I can’t even watch The Real Housewives because their heated arguments are too much for me. I’m not a wimp (well, maybe a bit), but it’s not entertaining to me to see people or animals being hurt. As I was deciding how brutal my vampires would be in their search for blood to drink, I had to consider what violence means to me.

I’m not fascinated by violence. To me, violence is the lowest common denominator. When we’re angry we want to lash out, physically or verbally, whether it’s with loved ones, the barista at Starbucks, at that guy in the gray BMW who cut us off in traffic. To me, giving into violence is weakness because it means I’m letting outside circumstances control my emotions and my behavior. And it seems, as I get older, that it’s becoming more accepted to be mean and rude and angry and violent.

Rising above that violence to be calm and rational, even kind, is an amazing thing, especially since it’s so easy to give into the anger. It takes an extra thought process, an extra determination, to overcome the fury. Now I was onto something. Overcoming our baser instincts to be better than we are. That fascinates me. And that’s the journey we’re all on—struggling to be better today than we were yesterday.

That is also the journey that James Wentworth, the vampire protagonist in Her Dear & Loving Husband, is on—being better than he was. Is he violent? He can be. But he’s working toward being more human than some humans. His motto is “Live and let live.” It’s a motto I try to live by as well.

Thank you for reading my post. I hope you enjoyed it.

How long would you wait for the one you loved?

Her Dear & Loving Husband, the new novel from Meredith Allard, is part literary fiction, part historical fiction, part romance, and part paranormal fantasy. With elements of Twilight and The Crucible, Her Dear & Loving Husband is a story for anyone who believes that true love never dies.

James Wentworth has a secret. He lives quietly in Salem, Massachusetts, making few ties anywhere. One night his private world is turned upside down when he meets Sarah Alexander, a dead ringer for his wife, Elizabeth. Though it has been years since Elizabeth's death, James cannot move on.

Sarah also has a secret. She is haunted by nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and every night she is awakened by visions of hangings, being arrested, and dying in jail. Despite the obstacles of their secrets, James and Sarah fall in love. As James comes to terms with his feelings for Sarah, he must dodge accusations from a reporter desperate to prove that James is not who, or what, he seems to be. With the help of their friends, witches Jennifer and Olivia, James and Sarah piece their stories together and discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. Will James make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Sarah and prevent a new hunt from bringing hysteria to Salem again?

~Last Line: "Some things never change."

Review: Her Dear and Loving Husband was a really awesome book! The first few chapters took a minute for me to get into, but as I got farther along I didn't want to put my Kindle down! Meredith Allard is one name I'll be on the lookout for!

Our main character, Sarah Alexander, is a young woman just divorced and new to Salem, Massachusetts, historical real-life setting of the Salem Witch Trials from three centuries earlier. Then add in James Wentworth, the the 30-something college professor with a secret. Together, the two are the most romantic couple, and they can't be spereated by anyone or anything.

The plot was most definitely original. I'd never read about something like this before. I love how the book included soo much history from the Salem Witch Trials. It was kind of like a history lesson mixed into a really awesome novel. Between the plot and the history alone, I wasn't able to put the book down!

The characters were super-awesome as well. Sarah and James were my ultimate favorites, of course, but I also loved James's "family" friend Jennifer. Jennifer is definitely the sarcastic one! In the two quotes below, she's present and she's the reason why I loved those scenes in the book.

There's so many great things about this series debut . . . Wow! I can't say all I want to, sadly, because then I'd have to give this review a ginormous spoiler alert. LOL. But I definitely recommend the book! :D

Quotes from the book:
" 'Do you think we should put some sunblack on him?'
'Sure, Mom. You have any SPF 400 laying around?' "

Sarah pulled a medical bag from the refrigerator. She sliced open the top with a knife she found in a drawer, pulled a stryofoam cup from the cupboard, poured the red liquid into the cup, and put it in the microwave.
'That doesn't gross you out?' Jennifer asked.
'It's what he drinks.'
'You really are the right girl for him.' "

And now, I have an interview with Ms. Meredith Allard! Help me give her a warm Butterfly welcome! :p

1. What made you want to be an author?
For whatever reason, writing always came easier for me than it seemed to for other people I knew. Teachers were always using my writing as an example for the class, and then when I was in high school one of my English teachers suggested I choose a career where I could use my writing skills—perhaps something like journalism. I took one journalism class and realized that was not the route for me—too formal and structured for my taste—but I still loved to write. I was an English major in college, and when we read David Copperfield by Charles Dickens the bells and whistles went off and I realized that’s what I wanted to do—write novels.

2. Did you love to read as a child growing up?
Absolutely. Books were a great escape for me when I was younger. I read anything and everything I could get my hands on, and often my school librarians knew me by name. My favorites were The Little House on the Prairie series, and anything by Judy Blume or Beverly Cleary. I still smile when I remember reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle and Shel Silverstein’s poetry for the first time. I remember reading Roots by Alex Haley when I was in third grade.

3. What are some of your favorite hobbies when you're not writing?
The truth is, most of my free time is spent writing. As crazy as it is, writing really is my favorite thing in the world to do. But I do have other interests! I love taking dance classes such as belly dancing, Zumba, and Polynesian dance. I enjoy yoga. Sometimes I scrapbook. I still read everything I can get my hands on. I like to cook, and I enjoy listening to music and watching movies.

4. How did you come up with the idea for Her Dear and Loving Husband?
After I had read a few vampire books, it occurred to me that, though vampires live forever, the people they love would have died at some point. How would vampires deal with that? Would they mourn their dearly departed for centuries? Would they forget and move on? I started seeing scenes of a vampire finding a woman who looked like his dead wife, and then I wondered what would happen to them because of that resemblance. At first, I didn’t realize there was enough there for a novel. Like most storytellers, crazy ideas just spring up out of nowhere for me sometimes, and usually I dismiss the crazy ideas and they go away. But this one wouldn’t leave. I fell asleep at night and woke up in the morning thinking about it. Finally, after about six months, I decided to see if there was anything to this idea about the vampire and his wife and I started writing out the story.

The idea for the heart of the novel came about when I decided to set the story in Salem, Massachusetts. I didn’t originally intend to have any historical fiction in the story, but once I chose Salem as the setting I had to incorporate the Salem Witch Trials somehow. I’m glad I did because the historical context gives the story meaning and depth in a way I didn’t originally intend, and a lot of readers have said that the history is their favorite part of the book.

5. What can we expect from you in the next couple of years bookwise?
Her Dear & Loving Husband is book one of the Loving Husband Trilogy, so right now I’m working on book 2, Her Loving Husband’s Curse. After that is book 3, so I’m going to be busy telling James and Sarah’s story for the next two or three years.

6. Do you like to sing and/or dance?
I do love to dance! As I said for question 3, I love belly dancing, Zumba, and Polynesian dance classes. And I didn’t realize until I was in my thirties that I had some talent for dance. I always assumed that I couldn’t dance—I don’t know why, I just thought that since I was a teacher and a writer I couldn’t dance. Doesn’t even make sense, right? Then one day a few years ago I saw a belly dancing class going on in the gym while I was on the treadmill. The dance class looked a lot more fun than the treadmill, so I took the class and I realized I could learn the moves and follow the routines fairly easily. Now I love to go to dance class. Just goes to show—we should all be willing to try new things because you never know when you’ll find something you connect with.

7. How can my followers and I keep up with you and your books?
