In My Mailbox #3

I know that this is a day late, but I was out of town. I got some awesome books this weekend, and I really wanna share them with yall!

-----------------------------------------------------

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted every week by The Story Siren. To find out how to participate and the "official" details, check out the IMM page.

Anyone can participate in IMM and you are not limited to sharing books that arrive via your mailbox. You can also share books that you've bought or books that you've gotten at the library.

-----------------------------------------------------

This weekend my family went to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and we got to stop by the Barnes & Noble there. Spent all of my birthday money there, too. LOL :).

LEFT TO RIGHT:

-- The Alchemyst by Michael Scott (GoodReads, Amazon) Yes, I finally got the first book! I will be starting this soon! :D
-- Fire by Krstin Cashore (Amazon)
-- Speak (Platinum Edition) by Laurie Halse Anderson (Amazon)

I'm really glad I had some b-day money to spend. I can't wait to read these fabulous books! :D

Sorry that the last two don't have GoodReads links. The computer is acting up. I will try to get them up there by tonight.

Happy Reading,

What's your status? (27/11/2010)

First of all, I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! :D

This post was inspired by, well, my previous Reading Status posts. I wanted to make it something that everyone could particpate in. Every Saturday (and sometimes Sunday), I will post what I've finished in the past week, what I'm currently reading and where I am in the book/s, what I plan to read next, and possibly what I want to buy/get. I will be trying to do this ever week, so be sure to check back every weekend! Be sure to enter your links to your WYS posts in the Linky Tool below. (The Linky Tools will always be left open on Sundays for those of you who can't post on Saturdays.)

Now, for my status! (Please keep in mind that you do not have to use this exact format. Whatever works for you is what works for me.)

Finished This Week:
  • Nothing unfortunately. I have been reading, though!

Currently Reading:

  • Remember Me (series omnibus) by Christopher Pike. On page 262. Right now, I believe Shari and Peter have just figured out Shari's true family. It was a shocker indeedy :).
  • Zan-Gah & the Beautiful Country by Allan Richard Shickman. On page 64. Zan and the Ba-Coro tribe have begun their treacherous journey to the now uninhabited beautiful country, which once belonged to the infamous wasp people, but they own it no more. (Sounded so poetic.)

Next On My TBR (To Be Read) Pile:

  • The Hobbit (the Lord of the Rings prequel) by J.R.R. Tolkien. Yes, I know that just last week it was under Currently Reading, but I'm just not finding the time to read it like the other two. Maybe after I finish one -- or both of them -- I will be able to enjoy this one.

What I Would Like To Buy/Get Next:

  • I will probably be using my birthday money to invest in some books for a possible giveaway, and The Alchemyst by Michael Scott.

So you get how this works, right? Not complicated at all. Don't forget to post the link to your WYS posts in the Linky Tool below!

WWW Wednesdays #1

This weekly meme is hosted by MizB @ Should Be Reading. To play along, just answer the following questions:

1) What are you currently reading?
2) What did you recently finish reading?
3) What do you think you'll read next?

My answers:

1.) I'm currently reading Remember Me by Christopher Pike, Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country by Allan Richard Shickman, and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Remember Me is getting even more interesting! It is the entire trilogy in one book, and I'm almost done with the first story. Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country is also getting really intriguing. I am about halfway through this one. The Hobbit I have not exactly started reading. I'm still on page 1, but plan to start stuffing my nose in it after the holidays.

2) The last book I finished reading was Radiance by Alyson Noel. It was awesome! Rated it 4 stars. The review should be up soon.

3) I'm not really sure what I will be reading next. Probably Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I have been wanting to finish this one for a really long time :).

Happy Reading (and Happy Holidays!!),

The Magician by Michael Scott. (GoodReads, Amazon)

And then, when I started reading it last night, I realized that it was the second book in the series, so I can't start reading it yet. We laughed and laughed about her mistake :).

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure by Allan Richard Shickman

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure (Zan-Gah, #1)
By Allan Richard Shickman
Publisher: Earthshaker Books, 2010 (second printing)
148 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 11/ 11/ 2010
Genres: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Action, Adventure, Coming of Age

~First Line of Book: "From a long dfistance a traveler, or some wild thing, might see within the deep and absolute blackness of night an intense orange light which looked from afar like a glowing coal."
~Last Line of Book: "Dael smiled."

Review: Firstly, I would like to send a big THANK YOU to Bonnie Lenz at Earthshaker Books for contacting me and asking me to review this book; another thank you to Mr. Shickman for autographing the book.

Now on to my review.

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure was an amazing series debut. The story's main character, Zan, is serious a lot, and has a twin named Dael, who is always cheerful and happy. Dael and Zan have a fight one day over food, and Dael wanders off -- and never returns. A year later, Zan earns a new name, Zan-Gah, for his bravery in the killing of an enemy. Zan starts having strange dreams about Dael and sets off to find and rescue his lovable brother. Zan makes new friends and basically becomes a man during his struggle to stay alive and successfully find his twin. Adventure, action, unity and forgiveness. This series debut will have you reading it whenever you ahve the chance! I recommend this book to all Historical Fiction lover. A great read indeed :).

Quotes from the Book:

--And now for the bad news: I read the book so fast and was so into it that I forgot to gather quotes from the novel! I am sorry that you all have to suffer because of it, but at least now you might actually go buy the book (lol). But no matter. I wish to very Happy Reading!!

Reading Status (13 Nov, 2010)

Finished This Week:

  • Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure by Allan Richard Shickman. Finished on 11/ 11/ 2010. This was such an awesome book!! It was a really good series debut, and the characters were very unique. The review will be up within the next 3 days, make sure to check it out! (Thank you to Bonnie Lenz for asking me to review this!)

Currently Reading:

  • Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country by Allan Richard Shickman. On page 4. This is the sequel to Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure. It's really good so far, even though all they are doing is giving a synopsis of what happened in the last book. I can tell that the series will be very promising! :D
  • Reunion of the Untouchables by Kurt Frenier. On page 101. I will be reading this all day today so hopefully I will finish it and you all will have a review about it in the next week. Keep your fingers crossed!
  • Remember Me by Christopher Pike. On page 186. I haven't been reading this one in a while, because I've been trying to read so many others. I have cut down on 5 books, however, and hope that that will help me finish some books a little (or a lot) faster :).

Next On My TBR Pile:

  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien OR
  • 1984 by George Orwell

Happy Reading,

Chosen by P.C. & Kristin Cast

Chosen (House of Night, #3)
By P.C. & Kristin Cast
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin, 2008
320 pages, Kindle Edition
Date Finished: 25/ 10/ 2010
Genres: Young Adult, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Some Action, Romance

~First Line of Book: " 'Yep, I have a seriously sucky nirthday,' I told my cat, Nala."
~Last Line of Book: "As usual, Nala summed up my life perfectly: kinda funny, kinda gross, and more than kinda messy."

Review: This novel was shorter than I thought it was. First I'm at 25% read, and then 4 hours later I'm done. Of course, I wasn't reading the entire 4 hours, which further proves my point. I wish that P.C. & Kristin could have had more action in Chosen, but I suppose it didn't fit right with the rest of the plot for this novel.

Zoey is having some serious guy issues. She has imprinted on Heath, is dating Erik, and flirts with Loren whenever they're alone. On top of that, she has been lying to her friends, and once the find out the truth everything, they come to the conclusion that they can't trust Zoet at all anymore. To make the plot even crazier, Aphrodite and Zoey seem to be becoming friends!! Now if that doesn't make your mouth drop open, I honestly don't know what will. LOL.

Chosen was a wonderful addition to the House of Night series, and Untamed is sure to be even better :D!

Rating:

Quotes from the Book:

"Both of us saw totally eye to eye about my mother. One, she made us sad. Two, we wished she would change. Three, we knew she probably wouldn't."

" 'That man is such a damn turd monkey.'
'Grandma!' I said.
'Oh, Zieybird, did I call your mother's husband a damn turd monkey out loud?'
'Yes, Grandma, you did.'
She looked at me, her dark eyes sparkling. 'Good.' "

"The last thing I needed was a secret affair with someone who was even more off-limits that a huiman ex-boyfriend. (Sadly, it seemed like the last thing I need is usually the first thing I get.)"

"I hated it when kids got all nervous and scared around me like they think I might turn them into something vile. Please. It's the House of Night, not Hogwarts. (Yes, I read the Potter books and love the movies. Yes, that's more proof of my geekness.)"

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments, #2)
By Cassandra Clare
Publisher: McElderry Books, 2008
453 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 24/ 10/ 2010
Genres: Coming of Age, Young Adult, Action, Some Adventure, Fantasy, Some Romance

~First Line of Book: "The formidable glass-and-steel structure rose from the position on Front Street like a glittering needle threading the sky."
~Last Line of Book: " 'Yes,' Madeleine said. 'I mean I can show you how to wake your mother up.' "

Review: OH MY GOSH!! This book was such an incredible sequel to City of Bones. There was a little more romance, but not much. Unfortunately, Clary & Jace's relationship is sort of icky right now, especially by the time you get to the end of the novel. It's like they want to be more than brother and sister, but they don't want to disappoint others.... So annoying. They should hust follow their hearts already! But this is no time for love advice. Frankly, I'm the last person that should even be giving it. LOL.

Anyway, we had some more awesome humour, but sadly, we didn't have as much as we did in City of Bones. Clary also gets a chance to visit the Fair Folk, or in other words, the faeries. The Seelie Court might be beautiful, but like it's queen, it's full of cruel realities.

WARNING: Simon is having a weird time in his life since he learned about Clary and Shawdowhunters, etc. His world is about to get even weirder/ worse. But you have to read to figure out what happens! :D

I'm telling you, if you loved/ liked City of Bones, you will definitely enjoy this sequel. This series is unquestionably promising!

Quotes from the Book:

"Alec looked taken aback. 'Last time we faced a demon, she just cowered and screamed.' Seeing Clary's acid glare, he shot her an apologetic glance. 'I'm sorry, but it's true.' "

" 'Isabelle says the Queen of the Seelie Court has requested an audience with us.'
'Sure,' said Magnus. 'And Madonna wants me as a backup dancer on her world tour.'
Alec looked puzzled. 'Who's Madonna?' "

"This one caught the sleeve of Jace's jacket and tore it across.
'My jacket,' said Jace in a rage, and stabbed down at the thing as it rose, piercing its back. It shrieked and disappeared. 'I loved that jacket.' "

"She'd cried loudly enough that the man sitting across from her had offered her a tissue, and she'd screamed, What do you think you're looking at, jerk? at him , because that was what you did in New York. After that she felt a little better."

30 + Change #3 (October 2010)

I totally forgot about needing to post this until now. Sorry it's so late! Here's what I bought in the month of October:

1.) Nevermore by Kelly Creagh. Cost: $9.99. This was the Group Read on one of my GoodReads groups, but I didn't get a chance to read it. Maybe before the year is out.

2.) The Iron King (the Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa. Cost: $7.20.I have been wanting to start this series for a while, and I'm always hearing great things about it. However, like Nevermore, I won't be reading it before sometime in December probably.

3.) Nightlight: A Parody by Harvard Lampoon. Cost: $9.64. I actually bought this book in paperback. I wanted the book, didn't have money to buy it, and was disappointed when my dad said he wasn't buying it for me. But he did anyway -- I just had to agree to use my Kindle money. So that's what I did. :) I loved this book! Rated it four wings. Review of Nightlight.

Total Spent: $26.83

October was the same amount of books gotten as Sept., but I still haven't read any of the ones that are actually on my Kindle. Hopefully I will get to read them soon!

Happy Reading,
Zakiya :D

Another Library Visit!

Last Monday (November 1st), we went to the library in Reading/ Language Arts and I got The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson by Emily Dickinson. The latter is a ginormous book! It has 700-something pages, and they're all poems! :D I am ecited to read it, but I'm not sure I will be starting it any time soon. I am reading The Hobbit for a bookmark -- yes, a bookmark. Engraved on this place marker are 50 books that are so marvelous that you must read them at some point before you die. I've already read a few of them, but I am going to reread those just because I loved them.

Reading Status (6 Nov, 2010)

Haven't finished anything yet this month, but I'm getting close! :D

Currently Reading:
  • Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure by Allan Richard Shickman. On page 61. The publisher of this book emailed me asking me to read the first two books in this series, and, after receving my mom's OK, gladly accepted the offer! It seems like a really awesome book, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series :).
  • Reunion of the Untouchables by Kurt Frenier. On page 101. I have read a little, but not a lot. Hopefully, I will be able to finish it either tomorrow or Monday.
  • Betrayed by Claire Robyns. On page 1. Haven't had a chance to start reading this one. Maybe I'll ahve a little more time to get into it after I finish the above two.
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Have read 2%. I haven't gotten my Kindle out to read this book for a long time; I've almost forgotten what was happening. Not good :(.
  • Remember Me by Christopher Pike. On page 186. I haven't been reading this one at all since I started Zan-Gah. Everything is being held up by Reunion of the Untouchables and ZG because I want to finish those since they were requested. One day I'll get around to this one...
  • The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 by Trisha Telep. On page 1. I read one of the stories that was in the middle of the book first because my freind said that it was the best one. Now I must start from the beginning. Here we go...
  • Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. On page 6. I havent gotten back around to reading this since the day I started reading it :( ! Maybe next week...
  • 1984 by George Orwell. On page 5. I was starting to get into this book, but hen I received Zan-Gah. I am determined to start back on this book ASAP so that I can finish it. So far, though, it's super-good! :D

Next On My TBR Pile:

  • Nothing until I can knock out at least 6 of these books :). And I've still got 2 library books to read. Speaking of which, I need to make a post of that. LOL :>.

Until next time,

Zakiya LadyWings :)

School's Out - Forever by James Patterson

School's Out - Forever (Maximum Ride, #2; The Fugitives, #2)
By James Patterson
Publisher: Little, brown and Company, 2006
409 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 9/6/2010
Genres: Action, Adventure, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Young Adult

First Line of Book: "Sweeping, swooping, soaring, air-current thrill rides -- there's nothing better."
Last Line of Book: "Fang and I leaned against each other and laughed and laughed, unable to speak, for the longest time."

Review: This book was amazing! After waiting a whole month to read the sequel to The Angel Experiment, I was more than happy to to start this novel. There was more action, adventure, and more humans that make Max and the flock feel normal. More battles with Erasers -- wo've been upgraded; they now have wings -- and more romacne. Tere seems to be quite a few people kissing in School's Out - Forever, but it didn't go any farther so it's pretty clean :). I am definitely recommending this book and series. Quotes from the Book:

"Compared to the Erasers, we were nimble little stinging wasps, and they were cluinky, slow, awkward flying cows."

" 'Boy, you just can't kill people like you used to,' said Fang."

"Later I sat at the table doing my homework, which is just anotehr term for "grown-up-imposed yet self-inflicted torture," IMHO." {IMHO = in my humble opinion}

"In less than a minute I had to angle out of it and swoop up again so I didn't squish like a mosquito on the windshield of the world.
Who said poetry was dead?"

" 'I'll be second-in-command,' Total offered.
'Oh yeah, you'd be so focused on the job,' Gazzy sneered. 'Until a rabbit ran across your path.' "

" 'How?' I persisted. 'We look identical. She even had indentical scars and scratches. She was wearing my clothes. How could you tell us apart?'

Fang turned to me and grinned, making my world brighter. 'She offered to cook breakfast.' "

Nightlight by Harvard Lampoon

Nightlight: A Parody
By Harvard Lampoon
Publisher: Vintage Books, 2009
154 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 19/ 10/ 2010
Genres: Young Adult, Comical, Fantasy, Coming of Age, Some Action, Romance

~First Line of Book: "The hot Phoenix sun glared down on the car windowsill where my bare, pallid arm dangled shamelessly."
~Last Line of Book: "And with that Edwart put his cold lips to my neck, for the first time."

Review: Some would think that since I am a ginormous Twilight fanatic, I would be totally against reading a parody of the series debut. Yet, I found the synopsis of the book very funny, so I decided to give it a try.

I have to admit that at the beginning I wanted to throw it across the room quite a few times. But as I got more into the story and became adjusted to the characters' ersonalities, it got to be really humorous, as it was supposed to be. Even if you are a Twilight fanatic, it is possible for you to like Nightlight! One of the reasons that made me reconsider if I really wanted to read this book was the fact that so many people had given it a low rating. However, I'm glad that I gave this book a chance. To the author/s, wonderful job in writing this parody! :D

Quotes from the Book:

"I walked towards him shyly, tripping over a toddler and soaring into a keychain display. Embarrasses, I straightenedup and fell down the escalator, somersaulting over the roller luggage inconsiderately placed on the left side. I get my lack of coordination from my dad, who alwaysused to push my down when I was learning how to walk."

"I'd never imagined how I would die, but I had kind of hoped it would be in a war. I had never thought it would be like this: by snowball."

"Adam strutted away in a gait not quite as manly as Edwart's unpredictable limb-flail."

"The sun had set now and the streets were eerily quiet except for the spooky "Whoooooo" noise I made to scare away zombies -- enemies of spooks. I had to counteract this with zombie noises to scare away any spooks I might have attracted."

"He stood there for a minute, thinking, then jogged across the field.
'As if you could outrun me!' he shouted.
'As if you could outfight me!' He punched the air.
'As if you could outclimb me!' He hugged a tree and tried to wrap his legs around it before tumbling to the ground and trotting back to me, placing hishands on his head to maximize thw inflow of oxygen.
'Now are you afraid?' "

"I started to lick my lips, too, because it's one of those subconscious, contagious things like sneezing, but then I stopped because it just isn't worth it if you forgot to bring ChapStick."

"Plus, his anger had set off his overactive sweat glands, causing him to tear off his shirt. As he stood up to march down the road, squatting here and there to eamine the terrain, the musculature of his arms wobbled like string cheese."

Trip to Books-A-Million!

Saturday (October 30th), I went to Books-A-Million. My treat for having such good grades. While I was there, I met two really nice girls, Brittany and Destiny. We exchanged numbers, and we are already talking regularly! While at BAM, I got 4 Clique books (by Lisi Harrison) that I've had to borrow and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. Saturday was definitely an exciting, busy day. Unquestionably, this has been the busiest week of my life since school started :D!

Reading Status (1 Nov, 2010)

Finished This Week:
  • City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare. Finished on 24/ 10/ 2010. This book was wonderful!! It was an awesome sequel to City of Bones, and I'm glad that I finally got a chance to read it.
  • Chosen (House of Night, #3) by P.C. & Kristin Cast. Finished on 25/ 10/ 2010. Finally, I have finished the third installement to the House of Night series. It did take me a while, and all while I was reading the book at the end, I noticed how short the book really was. Read the last of it super-fast! Oh well; Untamed, here I come :D!

Currently Reading:

  • Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. On page 6. I am re-reading this for the VA series re-read challenge in Oct and Nov. Wish me luck :)!
  • Betrayed by Claire Robyns. On page 1. Haven't started reading this one yet, but I will be reading it online.
  • The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 by Trisha Telep. On page 1. I read a story in the middle of the book, which the person who is loaning this to me said I had to read first since it was the best. It definitely was the best, and I can't wait to start from the beginning! :D
  • 1984 by George Orwell. On page 4. This is really good so far. I really just got into it last night, but I haven't read much, as you can see, lol.
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Have read 2%. I haven't been reading this in the last few days, but I will try to get a little of it read this week and this weekend.
  • Remember Me by Christopher Pike. On page 180-something. I can't remember exactly which page I'm on, and since I'm lazy, I don't feel like looking. The novel is getting good, though. Still on the first book (RememberMe).
  • Reunion of the Untouchables by Kurt Frenier. On page 90. Haven't been able to read lately. Been really busy. Will try to finish the novel this week :).

Next On My TBR Pile:

  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
  • Frostbite by Richelle Mead
