City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments, #4)
By Cassandra Clare
Publisher: McElderry Books, 2011
424 pages, hardcover
Date Finished: 11/5/2011
Genres: Young Adult, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Action, Romance
City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can — training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace. As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters, they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever.

Meanwhile, internecine warfare among vampires is tearing the Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing to do with Downworld politics. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.

~First Line: " 'Just coffee, please.' "
~Last Line: "We are one."

Review: This novel was once so far at the top of my "anxious to read" list that you had to tilt your head back. Now that I've read it, it's definitely lived up to what I'd hoped.

Clary and Jace aren't exactly terribly wishing that they weren't related anymomre. So, of course, they're dating. A beautiful love I have ti say. They have their on and off moments, though, when they can't be around each other for whatever reasons. It's actually all quite confusing sometimes.

But, getting past the romance, someone's trying to kill Simon. Of course, they aren't succeeding because of *voice fades out :)* but at least they have the courage to try, right? Jace is, surprisingly, helping Simon by being his bodyguard, so to speakk. Simon's also being guarded by quite the interesting new character -- Jordan Kyle. I won't get into who he is, and he's back and all that, but I will say that he's a very good charrie addition to the series/book.

City of Fallen Angels has maintained the 5-Wings rating of Bones, Ashes, and Glass; now join me in tilting out heads back to look at City of Lost Souls on my "anxious to read" list. :D

Quotes from the Book:
" 'Jace has. I mean, I assume he has. I don't know for sure. But if you ever need anything . . .' She let the sentence hang in the air.
'Need anything?'
'Protection. You know. So you can be careful,' Isabelle said. She sounded as practical as if she were talking about extra buttons. 'You'd think the Angel would have been foresighted enough to give us a birth-control rune, but no dice.' "
" 'Good organization,' said Magnus. 'I knew the man who founded it, back in the 1800s. Woolsey Scott. Respectable old werewolf family.'
Alec made an ugly sound in the back of his throat. 'Did you sleep with him, too?' "
" 'He's pretty attractive, if you like the messy-haired, broad-shouldered, shiseled-good-looks type.'
Magnus put his head in his hands.
'Or there are plenty of girls here, since apparently your taste goes both ways. Is there anything you aren't into?'
'Mermaids,' said Magnus into his fingers. 'They always smell like seaweed.' "

This week's teasers come from page 289 of Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (GoodReads, Amazon):

I whip around at the sound of her name. One of the swim-team girls is half standing out of her chair, waving. I scan the restaurant, looking for Juliet, but there's only one person at the door.

This book is still being read, but I'm loving it! Thanks Leanne for letting me borrow it :)

The Dead Girls' Dance by Rachel Caine

The Dead Girls' Dance (Morganville Vampires, #2)
By Rachel Caine
Publisher: New American Library, 2007
238 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 29/4/2011
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Action, Coming of Age

Claire Danvers faces more challenges from both college and the undead in this second entry in the Morganville Vampires series.
~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: "It didn't happen, Claire told herself."
~Last Line: "Claire opened the draw and found a pen."

Review: Caine has definitely won me over. There's no way I won't be speedily finishing the Morganville Vampires series. Corny, full of action, and fun enough for any teen to understand, The Dead Girls' Dance takes Claire and her roommates on yet another journey.

Now that Claire knows why Michael disappears every sunrise, she isn't curious and desperate to learn more about him. But she's till got lots to learn about the way things work in Morganville, Texas. To add one more thing to the list of bad occurrences, Claire's parents decide to come to town to visit her at the college. As you've probably already mumbled, this was not a good thing for Claire.

Then something very unexpected happens -- Brandon, a vampire, is murdered. Everyone is shocked, even Claire and her roommates, who didn't exactly like him. The main vampires blame Shane's dad for the crime, but as his dad is MIA, they imprison Shane himself. I mean, personally I don't think it's fair, but they found his dad in the end. He and his gangster-helpers (LOL not really; they're bikers) broke Shane out of jail. That's when the vampires use Claire as bait. I know right? Just marvelous. . .

But anyway, this novel was an awesome sequel to Glass Houses, and I'm once again happy that I started this series :).

Quotes from the book:
"The heat was making her feel slow and disconnected. She wanted to pour the cold water over her face, but realized just in time -- again-- about the makeup. Stupid makeup."

What's your status? (28/5/2011)

This post was inspired by, well, my previous Reading Status posts. I wanted to make it something that everyone could particpate in. Every Saturday (and sometimes Sunday), I will post what I've finished in the past week, what I'm currently reading and where I am in the book/s, what I plan to read next, and possibly what I want to buy/get. I will be trying to do this every week, so be sure to check back every weekend! Be sure to leave your links to your WYS posts in the comments.

This next portion of the post is an idea that I saw on the wonderful blog Small Review. She posts what reviews and memes she has posted and participated in that last week. Remember, however, that it is not mandatory for you to do this part of the post.

Today and next Sat. (June 4th) are the last days to sign up for WYS contest! Next week, there will be a schedule at the bottom of the post to make sure every participant has a date.

Now, for my status! (Please keep in mind that you do not have to use this exact format. Whatever works for you is what works for me.)

Finished This Week:
1. Beastly by Alex Flinn. Finished on 23/5/2011. LOVED this novel! I am already planning to read Cloaked with one of my co-bloggers in late June :D.

2. Hate List by Jennifer Brown. Finished on 24/5/2011. I loved this novel as well! My BFF gave it to me in Nov as a bday present, and I'm so glad she did! Expect a review soon!

3. Wither (Chemical Garden trilogy, #1) by Lauren DeStefano. Finished on 27/5/2011. This novel left me absolutely speechless. I am SO anxious to get my hands on Fever! :D

Currently Reading:
1. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. On page 107. This was going to be the next book for me to accomplish during the read-a-thon, but it ended before I had a chance. I am still about to finish it, however :).

2. Kea's Flight by Erika Hammerschmidt & John C. Ricker. On page 72. Haven't read this one in a while. I will be starting back on it soon, though!

4. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson. Have read 3%. This is really eating me up! I've been wanting to read this book for so long, yet now that I own it, I can't find the time to read it. Maybe after I finish BIF and TLatL?

Book Blogger Hop #14 & Fun Friday #3

As always, the Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Jen over @ Crazy-for-Books.

This week's question is from Britta @ I Like These Books:

"Which book-to-movie adaption have you most liked? Which have you disliked?"

My answer: I'm not really sure of this one. There's only so many that I've seen the movie for. It's either I've seen the movie, but haven't read the book; or I've read the book, and have yet to see the film. So basically this week is answered yet again by the words Harry Potter :).

The best b2m adaption, to me, is Deathly Hallows (Part 1) because they put a bunch into it. They really are bringing out all of the aspects from the book. The "worst" adaption to me is Half-Blood Prince. This is one of my favorite books in the series, but the movie just didn't live up to it. There wasn't as much detail in the movie as there was in the book, and it cut down on some of the things I would've loved to see.

What are your favorite & least favorite b2m adaptions?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a meme that one of my really good blogging friends, Destiny @ Green Lillipads, started, and I thought it was a really awesome idea! You just post a book, CD, song, movie, etc. that you think is really cool for that week :). This week's cool-spotlight is on:
Thursday Interpretation #11 & Library Unveiled #2
Thursday Interpretations is a "meme," which means that you may participate in this on your blog, but I won't be advertising it nor adding a Linky for links to your post/s.
Anyway, Thursday Interpretation will be a weekly post where I post a motivational quote (and/or a book quote) and tell you my feelings about it. You are more than welcome to post a comment telling how you feel about the quote.
*Remember that these are only my opinions. They are not influenced by anyone else.*
This week's motivational quote:
"The secret to wisdom is to be curious, to keep wandering and wondering." ~Eve Merriam
My Thoughts: If you want to get smarter, the easiest way is to stay curious throughout your life! The more questions you ask, the more you learn, even if it's a simple answer.
_______________________________________________________________________
This meme was started by my good 'ole blogging friend, The Mad Scientist @ Steampunkery & Book Reviews; every Thursday, you are supposed to post 5 books from your shelf and maybe give a snippet of your thoughts about the book. You can use physical books, ebooks, audios, whatever you have that makes up your library :). This week I'm unveiling:
Wither (Chemical Garden trilogy, #1) by Lauren DeStefano:
I have had this book for about a month now, and I will be starting it very soon as a BuddyRead with The Mad Scientist! Have heard awesome things about it, and am excited to start reading!
Falling Under (Falling Under, #1) by Gwen Hayes:
Again, I've heard awesome things about this book. I bought it for my blog's blogoversary giveaway. Will be starting it by late June :).
Clarity (Clarity, #1) by Kim Harrington:
Love the cover for this debut! Again, wonderful things have been said about it. Such a beautiful cover is sure to mean only one thing: the context is quite equal :).
Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth:
Bought this one for the giveaway as well. I have heard so many good things about Divergent that I can't even keep up with how many! This will be a sure-fire ahmazing read!
The Pillow Book of Lotus Lowenstein by Libby Schmais:
I won this one in a giveaway over at We Heart YA. Am looking forward to sticking my down thru the seam. If they were giving it away, I'm sure it's a spectacular book :).
Waiting on Wednesday #5: Bad Taste in Boys
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over @ Breaking the Spine; we are to give a book that we are anxiously anticipating the release of. I probably won't be participating every week, but I will try to post every so often.
This week's spotlight novel:
Bad Taste in Boys
By Carrie Harris
Publication Date: July 12th, 2011
From GoodReads.com:
Someone's been a very bad zombie.
Kate Grable is horrified to find out that the football coach has given the team steroids. Worse yet, the steriods are having an unexpected effect, turning hot gridiron hunks into mindless flesh-eating zombies. No one is safe--not her cute crush Aaron, not her dorky brother, Jonah . . . not even Kate!
She's got to find an antidote--before her entire high school ends up eating each other. So Kate, her best girlfriend, Rocky, and Aaron stage a frantic battle to save their town . . . and stay hormonally human.
What book are you looking forward to?
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush #1)
By Becca Fitzpatrick
Publisher: Simon & Schuster, 2009
391 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 25/4/2011
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Coming of Age, Romance, Action, Some Mystery
For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along.
With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.
~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: "Chauncey was with a farmer's daughter on the grassy banks of the Loire River when the storm rolled in, and having let his gelding wander in the meadow, was left to his own two feet to carry him back to the chateau."
~Last Line: " 'More.' "
Review: I felt so left out during the release of Crescendo last year because I hadn't gotten a chance to read Hush, Hush. Now, however, I can see why everyone was so hyped and excited for a sequel! Happy to know that The Mad Scientist (Steampunkery & Book Reviews) is generous enough to send me a copy of Crescendo. Thanks, MS!
The main character, Nora Grey, is just your average girl until she meets Patch in her biology (can't remember; it was some type of science) class. Patch is one of those guys that you can't help but be drawn to. Nora is automaticlaly drawn to him, of course, and does her best to find out whatever she can about him and his past.
Then someone begins following her around. And she's imagining things. Things that aren't really happening. Or are they? Her best friend, Vee, thinks that Patch is Nora's stalker, but Nora is determined to believe that he isn't. Besides, she can totall trust Patch -- right?
Even so, she eventually uncovers a lot about Patch's past. Some very interesting stuff if you ask me :). The romance between Nora and Patch was awesome. Definitely helped pull me in even more; not that I didn't already have my entire face stuffed in the book's seams!
Did I mention Elliot Saunders? No? Well, you'll just have to read the book to figure out who he is. Because I'm not telling!
This week's teasers come from page 177 of Beastly by Alex Flinn (GoodReads, Amazon):
I'd almost bored myself to sleep when I heard a door open. Could it be her? In the hall? Probably only Magda, or even Pilot, wandering. Yet it shounded like it was on the next floor, Lindy's floor. I willed myself not to look, to keep my eyes glued to the television so she wouldn't be frightened by my face in the darkness. I waited.
This book was SOO ahmazing! I can't believe it's taken me this long to buy it! Yepp, I've already finished it :). Definitely getting Cloaked and A Kiss in Time now!
This meme was started by Marcie @ To Read or Not To Read. She started it as a way to share a little about herself, but to learn about the rest of us as well. She says, "Sometimes its about books and book related topics and sometimes it's not. This is all in good fun and I would love it if you would participate."
This week's question is
"How do you feel about parents who monitor their children's reading?"
I am okay with it honestly. I know that they don't want us reading anything inappropriate. I understand that perfectly because my mom checks the synopsis of every book I read before she lets me buy it. At the same time, she's had her moments when she's said no to a book that I know for a fact there's nothing wrong with. If there are hundreds of people saying there's nothing wrong with a book, and most of them are somewhere within 10 years of my age, why can't she believe them? She has her moments. On parents as a whole, nothing wrong with it at all; just don't go overboard.
How do you feel about parents monitoring their kids' reading?
Leave a link to your IMM &/or SC and I will be sure to come by! :)
Finished This Week:
1. City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare. Finished on 11/5/2011. I borrowed this from one of my bestest friends. It was really awesome. I wasn't disappointed with Clare's latest addition to the MI series.
2. Between (Between, #1) by Cyndi Tefft. Finished on 17/5/2011. This one was a review request by Cyndi. I LOVED it! The review wont be up until early June, but it's definitely worth the wait :).
Currently Reading:
Book Blogger Hop #13
As always, the Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Jen over @ Crazy-for-Books.
This week's question is from Ivan @ Ivan Bookworm:
"If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?"
My answer: My first instinct would definitely be the Harry Potter series. Ever since I finished the series, I have wanted to live in the wizarding world. To get the chance to be famous like Harry, or super-witty like Hermione, or honestly even pure-blood like Ron. It just seems like the kids adventures are so much fun, even though they are usually really dangerous. Besides, visiting any different world would stop the constant boredom, right? :)
What fictional world would you want to visit?
Happy weekend, everyone!!
What's Your Status: A Contest!
**The last day to sign-up is June 4th, 2011!**
For the past few weeks, I have unsuccessfully tried to start this. Now that I'm back for good; I think we can get it going!
I am going to hold a contest of sorts, and each WYS participant from this week and next will be given a chance to host What's Your Status? on their blog. This will be called showcasing; every Saturday after "registration," each participant will have an assigned Saturday on which they will host WYS.
After everyone has had a week to host, I will hold a poll for viewers to vote on their favorite WYS posting format. (This is NOT the blog's format. It's the way that person posts What's Your Status?.) The winner of this poll will be hosting WYS for a few weeks. I might even have some swag that I can send them!
Viewers: You're the most important role in the whole thing! The contest participants need you to vote for them! Please, don't vote because of the name, or the colour of the blog's background. We would like for you to vote fairly :).
Every showcasing week, there will be a link to the featured blogger's WYS post. You should probably go ahead, click, and check it out. You may need to write down the ones you like the most! Notice: the poll will be one vote per person, not multi-answer.
Participants: Feel free to get as creative as you want. Dont worry yourself about it too much, though. We want you to be functioning afterwards!
If you are a WYS participant, and you would like to be part of this contest, you can leave your email address in the comments with your link Saturday; if you don't feel comfortable with that, please feel free to email me at massiekurhatesu [at] gmail [dot] com.
Participants, please remember that you may vote as well! You may vote for yourself, or another participant.
I hope to see several people participating!
Teaser Tuesday #25
This meme is hosted weekly by MizB @ Should Be Reading. Anyone can participate, even if you don't have a blog (you can post back in MizB's comments).
*Grab your current read.
*Open to a random page.
*Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from that page. You can share more if you want!
*BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!!! (Make sure that what you share doesn't give away too much information. You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
*Share the title and autor as well, so that Teaser participants may add to their TBR list/s if they enjoy your teasers!
*Leave a link in the comment section of MizB's blog so that others can check out your teasers! You may leave your teasers here with the book title and author if you do not have a blog. (MizB's Blog)
This week's teasers come from page 326 of Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (GoodReads, Amazon):
Lena was sandwiched between Link and me in the front seat of the Beater, writing on her hand. I could just make out the words shattered like everything else. She wrote all the time, the way some people chewed gum or twirled their hair; I don't even think she realized it. I wondered if she would ever let me read on eof her poems, if any of them were about me.
This book is really awesome so far! Will be trying to get back into it soon :). Stay tuned in to the blog today. Some info about What's Your Status will be posted!
Happy Reading!
Music Monday #13
Music Monday is a "meme"* that I will try to post every week or biweekly. In these posts, I will provide you with what song, artist, CD, etc. I am currently into the most.
* Meme is quoted because I will not be providing a Linky for you to add you links to, nor will I be advertising these posts. However, if you would like to participate and leave a link or your music info in a comment, I have no problem with that.
[As you all may have noticed, I never had a movie up in the last few posts. For this reason, I have deleted the movie portion from these posts; however, you may still have movies in your posts or leave movie info in the comments.]
Mary is a 16 year old girl, that goes to a party to hopefully get with the boy she thought she loved. After some events at the party, she realises that he isn't the boy for her. A new boy walks into the party and changes Mary's life forever, is this the real thing? Is this what Mary has been striving to have?
~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: "A life of danger, boys, trying to gain respect, 'fun' and never-ending turmoil . . ."
~Last Line: "This has been the most romantic moment of my life, dancing and experiencing this with my love, my heart, my life, my Zackary."
Review: This novel was a great short story to read in between book tours and Buddy Reads. The love scenes could have been minimized, or even taken out completely, but the general plot line was awesome.
The two main characters, Zack and Mary, never knew each other until one night at a party they both happened to be attending. Over the next few days they fall deeper and deeper in love with each other. It was definitely true love, and their parents, especially Mary's, were happy to see their children happy.
Zack cared for Mary, like, a LOT. There was no mistaking his love for her. He would do anything to keep her safe, anything to make her happy. Mary cared equally for Zack -- well, maybe a little less that Zack's extreme. She was so much happier after she met Zack. Her previous events in life had been haunting her for years.
Zack and Mary sort of remind me of Clary and Jace from the Mortal Instruments series, as far as loving each other goes, anyway. It was all they could do just to stop thinking about each other for even five minutes.
There's actually only one love scene in this book, and it was a little graphic, but not an extreme caution. This novel was pretty good. I hate that it was so short, though, because the plot was one that would've been great in a 200 - 350 page book :).
