Recommend A... #2

Hosted by Shanyn @ Chick Loves Lit

This week's prompt:
Recommend a book by a male author.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Simon Pulse, 2005

Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that? Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

I loved this book; it's easily the best in the series to me. Everything was fresh, and there's a lot of potential that the books continue to live up to later. Scott Westerfeld easily made his way onto my list of favorite authors with this novel, even more so because he's a man.

I did like Uglies a lot. It was one of my first dystopians when I started getting into YA, so it was a nice new experience. I didn't really like the rest of the series, though. Thanks for sharing!

Here's mine.

I've heard about this book but haven't had the chance to check it out yet. I may just do that now that I have a better feel for what it's really about. Thanks for sharing and for stopping by my blog earlier!

I have to ask, why more so because he's a man? That seems counterintuitive to me. I'm really curious about this apparent trend in the book world where people seem to prefer male authors and male characters. :S

I absolutely love this book. I read Uglies & Pretties twice, but never got around to finishing the series. I seriously should. Great choice!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I love reading what you have to say, whether good or bad. (This is not an open invitation to be rude.)

This blog is an award-free zone. I simply don't have the time to pass them on. Thanks for thinking of me, though :).
