My Newest Project

Hey to everyone! I was randomly talking to one of my friends, and have now made a new blog. It happened so fast, but I'm excited and would love for y'all to check it out! The new blog is The Life, Times, & Hardships of a True Book Addict. It will be a diary of sorts, where I post all the things I have to go through. I'm not sure if I want to post weekly or daily, or just when I need to vent a little. (I take all suggestions; feel free to leave comments.) Here's a piece of the welcome post: "Life, Times, and Hardships" can't begin to explain what I go through . . . It all comes down to trying to be a good person. . . . Not everything I post will be funny, or book-related, or even serious. It'll be a mix of everything. Like I said, I would really love it if some of you would go and follow, comment, whatever. Or you can just comment here telling me that you at least looked. No pressure :). Happy Reading to all, Zakiya LadyWings!

One Night That Changes Everything by Lauren Barnholdt

One Night That Changes Everything
By Lauren Barnholdt
Publisher: Simon Pulse, 2010
242 pages, hardcover
Date Finished: 21/3/2011
Genres: Some Adventure, Coming of Age, Realistic Fiction, Romance, Young Adult

Two years ago, when Eliza Sellman was in ninth grade, her dad found out he was being transfered and the family was going to move. Having always been shy and not so confident about her body, Eliza took that opportunity to start a list in her private notebook of all the things she planned on doing when she moved but had always been afraid to—like wearing a miniskirt and asking guys to dance; singing karaoke in front of strangers; posting a photo of herself on her Facebook wall in a bikini...you get the idea. New town, new Eliza, right? Well, she'll never know because the transfer fell through and they didn't move. But Eliza kept adding her goals and secret fears to the list in the notebook. Now it's two years later, and in that time Eliza has had and lost her first boyfriend. But this was more than your average breakup...turns out the sweet and cute Cooper was only dating her as a hazing stunt by a secret society. Eliza got her revenge by posting some pretty nasty (and only sort-of true) stuff about Cooper online. That posting has had major consequences and now Cooper and his buddies have stolen her private notebook and won't give it back until she performs all the things on her list in one night. It's torture...until Eliza steals something from the boys she knows they'll want to trade her notebook for. What starts out as a night of humiliation turns into a night of revelations as Eliza learns what Cooper was really thinking when they dated, the real reason he's stolen her notebook, and how freeing—and life-changing—it can be to do the things you fear the most.
~from goodreads.com~

~First Line: "I lose everything."
~Last Line: "And finally, when my notebook's nothing but ashes, I put the fire out and head up to bed."

Review: I first learned of this novel when Leanne let me read the sample of it she'd gotten on her iPod. I instantly fell in love with it and wanted to read it. After I gave it to her as a birthday present and she read it, she let me borrow it.

One Night That Changes Everything was a little adventurous; the characters were only traveling around their hometown, but they were going all over the place. The characters were awesome. They were developed really weel; I think my favorite would have to be Cooper. He's Eliza's (the main charrie) ex, and he still has feelings for her, of couirse. I think what made me love him so much was that he was a really good actor. His friends didn't know he was helping Eliza until the end. Obvioiusly, Eliza wasn't oh-so-grateful for his help. At first.

Eliza's character was just sort of iffy to me. I liked her, but at times I didn't like her. She was so stuck up on why she and Cooper broke up that she wouldn't let herself believe she still had feelings for him. Or that she should accept his aid. The secondary characters, which in my opinion were Eliza's best friends, Clarice and Marissa, were likable. They weren't the best, but I really enjoyed how they added to the story; in the beginning they couldn't stand each other, but after that one terrible night, they were super-close.

Yes, you read that right: All 242 pages take place in one night. That's another part I liked. Lots of action in a small amount of time :).

I definitely recommend this book. It's a great book to read in between a ton of paranormal reads!

Quotes from the Book:

" 'That's what you put in your notebook? That you're afraid to ask some guys to dance?' She looks at me skeptically, like I've just announced I'm afraid to go to school or something. Which, actually, now that I think about it, it isn't that weird of a thing to be afraid of."

"So, the thing is, I don't really know how to dance. Like,my experience with dancing is kind of . . . limited. And when I say limited, I mean, you know, nonexistent."

" 'Don't you think that's a little dangerous?' I ask delicately. I know Clarice is from the South and all and she gets totally shocked when people actually (gasp) lock their car doors, but this is taking it alittle too far."

The Week Ahead... (Mar 28-Apr 3)

In My Mailbox #16 & Sunday Confessions #10

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted every week by The Story Siren. To find out how to participate and the "official" details, check out the IMM page.

Anyone can participate in IMM and you are not limited to sharing books that arrive via your mailbox. You can also share books that you've bought or books that you've gotten at the library.

-----------------------------------------------------

Brought from the store:

--Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Pre-ordered on Kindle:

--13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson (Free with Bonus Material)

Looking forward to begin both of these! 13LBE doesn't even come out on Kindle (with the free/bonus material thing) unti lApril 12th, so I jut pre-ordered.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This meme was started by Marcie @ To Read or Not To Read. She started it as a way to share a little about herself, but to learn about the rest of us as well. She says, "Sometimes its about books and book related topics and sometimes it's not. This is all in good fun and I would love it if you would participate."
This week's question is
"Do you judge a book by its cover?"
This seems to be one of the easiest questions for me to answer to far. I definitely judge books by their covers, by their titles, too, really. When I look at a book's cover, if it grabs my attention (in a good way) I make sure that it is on my TBR list so that I have a chance to learn more about it later. If the cover isn't doing it, I look to the title, or the author. :)
Do you judge books by their covers?
Leave a link to your IMM &/or SC and I will be sure to come by! :)
What's your status? (26/3/2011)
This post was inspired by, well, my previous Reading Status posts. I wanted to make it something that everyone could particpate in. I will be trying to do this every week, so be sure to check back every weekend! Be sure to leave your links to your WYS posts in the comments.
This next portion of the post is an idea that I saw on the wonderful blog Small Review. She posts what reviews and memes she has posted and participated in that last week. Remember, however, that it is not mandatory for you to do this part of the post.
Thursday Interpretation #8
Thursday Interpretations is a "meme," which means that you may participate in this on your blog, but I won't be advertising it nor adding a Linky for links to your post/s.
Anyway, Thursday Interpretation will be a weekly post where I post a motivational quote (and/or a book quote) and tell you my feelings about it. You are more than welcome to post a comment telling how you feel about the quote.
*Remember that these are only my opinions. They are not influenced by anyone else.*
This week's motivational quote:
"Forgiveness clears the way for all sorts of good things to happen." ~John Fischer
My Thoughts: Instead of holding a grudge for something that happened forever and ages ago, forgive the person (or thing)! When you forgive them, you might be able to do things you never thought possible; doors labeled "Opportunity" just might knock you off your feet :).
Happy Reading, everyone! :D
Warm-Up Wednesday #5 & Waiting on Wednesday #2: The Power of Six
Warm-Up Wednesday is a "meme," just like Music/ Movie Monday and Thursday Interpretation. In this weekly post, I will be using warm-ups that my R/LA (Reading/ Lanuage Arts) teacher gives us everyday. It probably will not be everyweek, though, because right now I don't have very many of them. All of the war-ups I will be posting on here have to do with making a choice or decision. Our choices/ answers have to be in paragraph form.
This week's question:
What is your definition of "success"?
My answer:
My definition of success is "the feeling of accomplishment." Of course, not everyone feels like they have ever been successful, but if they feel like they have accomplished something, then I believe they have reached success. To some, success is accomplishing something big, like the Olympics or making it to the point of graduation. Personally, I think even the lesser accomplishments are a meaning of success. Even small things are accomplishments, which is why I believe that success is "the personal feeling of accomplishment."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over @ Breaking the Spine; we are to give a book that we are anxiously anticipating the release of. I probably won't be participating every week, but I will try to post every so often.

This week's spotlight novel:

The Power of Six (Lorien Legacies, #2)
By Pittacus Lore
Publication Date: August 23rd, 2011

From GoodReads.com:

I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he's a mystery. But to me . . . he's one of us.

Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us—if we all still believe in our mission. How can I know? There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another . . . but our Legacies are developing, and soon we'll be equipped to fight. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign I've been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who may be strong enough to bring the six of us together?

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio—and failed.

I am Number Seven. One of six still alive.

And I'm ready to fight.

What book are you looking forward to?

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

This book counts toward the following challenges:

__________________________________________________

Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1)
By Charlaine Harris
Publisher: the Penguin Group, 2001
312 pages, hardcover (Library)
Date Finished: 17/3/2011
Genres: Mature Teen, Romance, Fantasy, Action, Mystery
Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life--and one of her coworkers checks out...Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.
~from goodreads.com~

~First Line: "I'd been waiting for the vampire for years when he walked into the bar."
~Last Line: "Back to normal."

Review: I have been wanting to read this series for quite a while, and I finally got the opportunity. One of my friends had checked it out of the library, and, after she finished it, she kindly agreed to let me borrow it (and now I have to turn it in for her because we're on Spring Break and it's due Thurs D: ).

Dead Until Dark really was amazing. The main character, Sookie Stackhouse, has been wanting to meet a vampire for years, and now she has the chance. Insert Bill Compton, your new-to-town vampire -- the only vamp in Bon Temps, Louisiana. He comes at a pretty bad time, though, because soon after his arrival, murders are popular, something that's just notheard of in Bon Temps. Sookie's starting to fall for him, but can he be trusted?

This book had a little action, but they don't really wander, so I wouldn't consider it adventure-y. There was romance, obviously, and it was mysterious to me since the town was tryting to figure out who the murderer was.

The characters were realluy unique in this book. Sookie didn't think the same way everyone usually does, which was pretty darn likable. Bill wasn't necessarily your average vamp, but he wasn't a predictable Edward Cullen either, so his charrie wasn't too cliche. The restaurant that Sookie works at, Merlotte's, is owned by her good friend Sam. Sam's character was one that I liked; he cared about Sookie a lot, and even though he waited until Bill got there to make a move, I loved his protective air of Sookie. Overall, all the characters brought something new and/or wonderful to the table of modern-day literature :).

This novel was super-interesting. I hope that I have the chance to read the rest of the series sometime soon! You really should try the series out, especially if you watch the TV show True Blood!

Colorful Animated Butterfly Pictures, Images and PhotosColorful Animated Butterfly Pictures, Images and PhotosColorful Animated Butterfly Pictures, Images and PhotosColorful Animated Butterfly Pictures, Images and Photos

Quotes from the Book:

"But rural northern Louisiana wasn't too tempting to vampires, apparently; on the other hand, New Orleans was a real center for them -- the whole Anne Rice thing, right?"

"For a second I felt ashamed at calling Bill to rescue me: I should have handled the situation myself. Then I thought, Why? When you know a practically invincible being who professes to adore you, someone so hard to kill it's next to impossible, someone preternaturally strong, that's who you're gonna call."

" 'So you could be a bird?'
'Yeah, but flying is hard. I'm always scared I'm going to get fried on a power line, or fly into a window.' "

Teaser Tuesday #21

This meme is hosted weekly by MizB @ Should Be Reading. Anyone can participate, even if you don't have a blog (you can post back in MizB's comments).

*Grab your current read.

*Open to a random page.

*Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from that page. You can share more if you want!

*BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!!! (Make sure that what you share doesn't give away too much information. You don't want to ruin the book for others!)

*Share the title and autor as well, so that Teaser participants may add to their TBR list/s if they enjoy your teasers!

*Leave a link in the comment section of MizB's blog so that others can check out your teasers! You may leave your teasers here with the book title and author if you do not have a blog. (MizB's Blog)

This week's teasers come from page 31 of One Night That Changes Everything by Lauren Barnholdt (GoodReads, Amazon):

And then I get it. THey're making me do the things that are in my notebook. All the things Im afraid of. And if I don't, they're going to post the notebook online, and everyone at school, no, everyone with an Internet connection, will know all my secrets. For a second, it feels like my throat swallows up my heart, and my breath catches in my chest. There's only one thing left to do. I put my head into my hands and start to cry.

This book was super-good. I read it in two days, and, even though I'm not reading it now, I just had to post about it.

Happy Reading!

Music/ Movie Monday #9

Music/ Movie Monday is a "meme"* that I will try to post every week or biweekly. In these posts, I will provide you with what song, artist, CD, etc. I am currently into the most. Also, I will be informing you on the latest movie/s I have seen and absolutely loved (or not-loved).

* Meme is quoted because I will not be providing a Linky for you to add you links to, nor will I be advertising these posts. However, if you would like to participate and leave a link or your movie and music info in a comment, I have no problem with that.

------------------------------------------------------

Music

1) Shawty Get Loose by Lil Mama ft Chris Brown & T-Pain. I had heard this song before, but we are using it as one of our songs for one of my hip-hop classes. It's a great song to just get up and dance to! :P

Song Rating: 4 Wings
Music Video:

Movie

Yesterday, my mom and I just happened to catch this movie -- finally from the beginning for me! -- and it was awesome. I've seen bits and pieces of it before, but I got the whole start of the story since I saw the first few minutes. It's about a boy, DJ, that, loves to dance. Competitive if you ask me. After dance-battling with another crew for a bucket of money and winning, the other crew jumps them behind the building. One pulls out a gun and DJ's brother is killed.

DJ then moves to live with his aunt and uncle and goes to Truth University. Fraternities and stepping are the biggest things to offer on the campus, and DJ is the one to add some flavor.

Loved this movie! OMG, really good. Want to see Stomp the Yard 2: The Homecoming now. :)

Movie Rating: 4.5 Wings

Happy Reading, Listening, and Watching!

Read It With A Buddy #5 - Deadly Little Secret

This book counts toward the following challenges:

Steampunkery & Book Reviews
__________________________________________________

Deadly Little Secret (Touch, #1)
By Laurie Faria Stolarz
Publisher: Hyperion Books, 2008
705 pages, e-book (iPod Touch)
Date Finished: 11/3/2011
Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Coming of Age, Some Mystery, Some Action, Realistic Fiction
Up until three months ago, everything in sixteen-year-old Camelia's life had been fairly ordinary: decent grades; an okay relationship with her parents; and a pretty cool part-time job at the art studio downtown. But when Ben, the mysterious new guy, starts junior year at her high school, Camelia's life becomes anything but ordinary.

Rumored to be somehow responsible for his ex-girlfriend's accidental death, Ben is immediately ostracized by everyone on campus. Except for Camelia. She's reluctant to believe the rumors, even when her friends try to convince her otherwise. She's inexplicably drawn to Ben...and to his touch. But soon, Camelia is receiving eerie phone calls and strange packages with threatening notes. Ben insists she is in danger, and that he can help--but can he be trusted? She knows he's hiding something... but he's not the only one with a secret.

~from goodreads.com~

~First Line: "I could have died three months ago."
~Last Line: "But then he tells me goodbye anyway."

Leanne's Review: I was looking for books one day on me iPod and came across Deadly Little Games, the third book in the Touch series. I read a sample of it and bought Deadly Little Secret. I immensely enjoyed this novel. The concept is different than most of the books I have read lately. Like all books, some of the characters were likable, some you just wanted to slap, and others you just didn't know why their motives were. That brings me to Camie's stalker. That whole situation confused me to no end. They were VERY wishy-washy, but I'll admit, I was looking forward to their point of view the whole time :). I am definitely buying Deadly Little Lies and Games. Laurie Fairia Stolarz is an amazing writer, and I can't wait to read some more of her work.

Zakiya's Review: WOW. This book was super-ahmazing! Leanne (who I believe is mentioned at least once in about 3/4 of my post:D) recommended that I read this; she had it on her iPod, so why not?!

I'm really glad that I read this, though. The main character, Camelia, is just your average high-schooler, with average friends, and average problems -- except for the fact that she has a stalker. Enter Ben, the new kid, also a supposed murderer. He has a special gift, which, even when unknown, sets him apart from the in-crowd. Everyone thinks that Ben is the one stalking Camelia, but he isn't. He's trying to help save Camelia's life as much as he possibly can.

I have to say, this novel was pretty darn-tootin' good. LOL. I read through it pretty quickly (yes, I remember what I read); the characters' behaviors weren't cliche at all, which I enjoyed. I haven't read a book with a stalker befor e(that I can remember) so it was something new to read about.

There was a little action near the end, and, as always. we had a little romance. Ben doesn something terribly heartbreaking, for Camelia if no one else, at the end of the book. Everything that happened in this book was somewhat different than others, unquestionably. Camelia's best friends, Kimmie and Wes, were ones that I liked. Kimmie was always trying to be a good friend and listen, but gets fed up at the end with Camelia always standing up for Ben -- a guy that she's not even sure she can trust -- and not even take the time to ask about on-going problems in her friends' lives.

But anyway, everything is really awesome at the end. I'm glad that there is a second and third -- and soon to be fourth -- novel after this one. If you haven't indulged yourself in this bovel, you gotta get it sometime! :P

Thursday Interpretation #7

Thursday Interpretations is a "meme," which means that you may participate in this on your blog, but I won't be advertising it nor adding a Linky for links to your post/s.

Anyway, Thursday Interpretation will be a weekly post where I post a motivational quote (and/or a book quote) and tell you my feelings about it. You are more than welcome to post a comment telling how you feel about the quote.

*Remember that these are only my opinions. They are not influenced by anyone else.*

This week's motivational quote:

"Evil can't find you as easily if you're not looking for it." ~John Fischer

My Thoughts: Simple as pie: If you aren't trying to stay in trouble, or do anything wrong on pupose just for the sake of being a "devil," so to speak, evil won't find you as easily. Stay fluttering angels!

Happy Reading, everyone! :D

Waiting on Wednesday #1: City of Fallen Angels

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over @ Breaking the Spine; we are to give a book that we are anxiously anticipating the release of. I won't be participating every week, but I will try to post every so often.

This week's spotlight novel:

City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments, #4)
By Cassandra Clare
Publication Date: April 5th, 2011

From GoodReads.com:

City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can — training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace. As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters, they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever. Meanwhile, internecine warfare among vampires is tearing the Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing to do with Downworld politics. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.

This week's teasers come from page 182 of Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris (GoodReads, Amazon):

Rene was talking to Mike Spencer, the funeral director, in Merlotte's one Thursday night, and they hushed when I got near. Naturally, that caught my attention. So I read Mike's mind. A group of local men were thinking on burning out the Monroe vampires. . . .

Maybe this was all liquor talking. Just to check, I dipped into the minds of the people around me. To my dismay, many of them were thinking about torching the vampire's nest. But I couldn't track down the origin of the idea. It felt as though the poison had flowed from one mind and infected others.

I find this book really interesting so far. First Harris novel ever for me, and she's leaving a good first impression :). Don't watch the True Blood series, but I'm thinking I should start!

Happy Reading!
