Vlog: What's your status? (24/9/2011)

This post was inspired by, well, my previous Reading Status posts. I wanted to make it something that everyone could particpate in. Every Saturday (and sometimes Sunday), I will post what I've finished in the past week, what I'm currently reading and where I am in the book/s, what I plan to read next, and possibly what I want to buy/get. I will be trying to do this every week, so be sure to check back every weekend! Be sure to leave your links to your WYS posts in the comments.

This next portion of the post is an idea that I saw on the wonderful blog Small Review. She posts what reviews and memes she has posted and participated in that last week. Remember, however, that it is not mandatory for you to do this part of the post.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1)
By Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company, 2010
563 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 13/8/2011
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Coming of Age, Action
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

~from goodreads.com~
~First Line: "There were only two kinds of people in our town."
~Last Line: "Seventeen the last to know."

Review: I've finally started reading this series after feeling like I was missing out on something big for the last two years. Now I can see why everyone is so crazy about these books! :D

The main character, Ethan Wate, lives in a small town named Gatlin, South Carolina. The town's shut-in, Macon Ravenwood, hasn't been seen around town in years; he stays in his house and doesn't want to be bothered with the rest of Gatlin's residents. Macon's niece Lena moves into town at the beginning of a new school year. Lena is immediately the town's outcast. She doesn't belong there, and everyone in Gatlin is making sure she knows it.

The plot was absolutely amazing. I really liked the addition of the witchcraft (of some sorts); Casters just might end up being the world's next obsession! Okay, well, maybe not; but Casters are definitely fantabulous.

The characters in Beautiful Creatures were really awesome, too. Lena was definitely my favorite before she went into her depression mode; once that phase started for her, Ethan was my favorite. Kami and Margaret portrayed a lot of grief through Ethan's father; he was a shut-in of the town as well, only he was accepted by the town, whereas Macon was feared. Amma was probably my third favorite character; she cared so much for Ethan and his father. She did anything and everything she could for them.

Overall, this novel was awesome. I can't wait to get my hands on Beautiful Darkness!
